Spinal compression can refer to vertebral compression fractures — most commonly caused by osteoporosis or trauma — or to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots by tumour, disc prolapse, or bony overgrowth, producing pain, neurological symptoms, and in severe cases paralysis. An orthopaedic surgeon or neurosurgeon evaluates the cause and severity using MRI and X-rays and determines whether conservative treatment, cement injection (vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty) for fractures, or surgical decompression is required. Urgent surgical assessment is needed when spinal cord compression causes rapidly progressive neurological deterioration.
