Diarrhoea in children is most commonly caused by viral gastroenteritis but can also result from bacterial infections, food intolerance, or antibiotic use, and dehydration is a key concern, especially in young children. A paediatrician can assess the degree of dehydration, identify the cause, and advise on oral rehydration therapy or, in severe cases, hospital admission. Persistent diarrhoea lasting more than two weeks may require further investigation for conditions such as coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.
